very good advice; I wish more people took it

"Write what you want."

I totally agree with that statement. I've written (and sold) stories about samurai, demons, time travelers, astronauts, aliens, espions, wizards, Russian-mafia types and the Old West -- just to name a few. Surprisingly, I've never been any of those things, though there is some debate about the "demon" part. Hee.

If I had written only what I "know" all my stories would be very different indeed. In another words, boring as hell.

Absolutely: Write what you want. I think that's how you grow as a writer. Or at least one way to grow....

I think when young or new writers get that "write what you know" piece of advice, they tend to take it to heart in a negative way. You can learn about any subject enough to write competently about it, as long as you do your research.
