This is everyone’s reminder that the Minnesota Fringe Festival production I am taking part in, "Invisible People," opens this Thursday, July 31st with 5 performances at the Minneapolis Theatre Garage -711 West Franklin Ave, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55405. Tickets are $12 and you need a Fringe Festival button, available at the venue for $4

Showtimes are:
Thursday, 7/31 @ 5:30 p.m.
Saturday, 8/2 @ 10:00 p.m.
Wednesday, 8/6 @ 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, 8/9 @ 7:00 p.m.
Sunday, 8/10 @ 1:00 p.m.

Description:
Invisibility tops the superpower list . . . but what is lost when we’re not seen? From a writer fearing his own erasure to a young man attempting to hide his transgender self in a monastery, it’s two true stories by two Minnesota-based writers in one can’t-see show.

Their stories—which are quite different, on the surface—are intertwined in one unified performance.

Michael Merriam fears that his loss of sight will make him invisible to those around him. “It all started with the fliers,” he says, describing the people passing out fliers advertising shows, political candidates, or grass-roots causes that begin to scurry past him when they see his cane.

Christy Marie Kent tries to become invisible by entering a monastery, thinking that hiding from women will cure her from wanting to become a woman. When this fails, she gives in and transitions to womanhood. “My physical transformation begins with this, hormone pills created from the estrogen-rich urine of pregnant mares. On the bright side, the sweet candy coating almost disguises the taste of horse pee.”

Explore with them the depths of the human spirit. Discover the ability to make the best possible lives for themselves—for ourselves.

Isn’t this what we all want?

But wait, there's more! I am also taking part in The Speculations Reading Series this Saturday, August 2nd at DramHaven Books, 2301 38th St E, Minneapolis. Each Speculations Reading runs from 6:30-7:45p.m., including a post-reading reception with free soda pop and cookies.

I will be reading from my newest novel Dark Waters, and probably something in support of my short store collection Whispers in Space. We will have books for sale, things to give away, and a drawing for a door prize!

I had a pretty good Minicon this year. The two panels I was on were well attended and had both excellent panelists and thoughtful audiences. I played music three nights in a row, which was a little tough on my hands, but worth it. My reading was reasonably well attended and I sold a few books and signed a few more.

The three panels I attended were pretty good as well, though I had to sit on my hands and bit my tongue a couple times at the first one. I only made it to one reading this year, Cat Valente's, but I loved her story and reading-style. Made friends with some visiting musicians and got to help take them out for Malaysian food. On Saturday, three different people gave me three different types of cupcakes. It is a mystery as to why this happened, but I am not complaining. I mean, cupcakes!

But mostly what made it a great convention was hanging out with people--too many to name here--but Minicon felt more like a family reunion this year, maybe because I learned how to make my own fun at conventions. I am planning to return next year for the 50th Minicon celebration.

I didn't hardly work at all at the convention, which says something about how engaged I was, but I did work a little and even a little more yesterday.

1. Completed the first draft of the 1979 section
2. Added small scenes to the 1979 section to seed other sections
3. Made notes and started outlining 1929 section
4. Search for and added 1920s music to playlist.

MarsCon!

Feb. 25th, 2013 07:06 pm
mmerriam: (Old Lynx)
I have my tentative Marscon schedule.

Looking Forward and Being Optimistic in SF -- Re(a)d Mars/Taylor (2nd Floor) — Friday 04:00 pm -- So much current SF is dark, grim, and dystopian. Renowned writers of SF have sneered at any attempts to move SF to a more positive portrayal of the future. What can we as writers and readers do to recapture the hope and joy that brought so many of us to SF? With: Michael Merriam, mod.; Kathryn Sullivan

Geek Physique: Geek Tai Chi – Baldwin (3rd Floor) — Saturday 01:00 pm -- Tai Chi, sometimes called “meditation in movement,” promotes well-being and harmony of body and mind – and Geek Tai Chi does it with Force Punches and Magic Missiles! Our newest class offering developed by local Geek and certified instructor specifically designed to bring the benefits of Tai Chi to those with injury or limited mobility, and people stuck in office chairs 8+ hours a day. ALL fitness and experience levels welcome! Wear: comfortable clothing and flat, non-heavy shoes. Bring: water bottle and your geeky self! With: Geek Physique {I will be helping my Wife with the demo}

Mass Autographing—Krushenko’s (13th Floor) — Saturday 04:00 pm -- Get your books and stuff signed by our Author, Science Author, and Artist GOHs, and other interested pros. With: Harry Turtledove, Sarah Clemens, G. David Nordley, Roy C. Booth, Michael Merriam, et al.

Writers Who Like to Write -- Re(a)d Mars/Taylor (2nd Floor) — Saturday 07:00 pm -- There are a lot of writers who like the idea of being a writer far more than the fact. Some of us don’t procrastinate or avoid writing, because we actually enjoy doing it. What are our techniques for getting things done, particularly when life interferes? Are we less “artistic” if we don’t have complicated or bizarre routines or requirements in order to write? Does one truly have to suffer to be a good or creative writer? With: S.N. Arly, mod.; Rachel Gold, Kimberly Long-Ewing, Michael Merriam

Michael Merriam Reading --Re(a)d Mars/Taylor (2nd Floor) — Sunday 10:00 am - Local author Michael Merriam will read from his short story collection, Whispers in Space, and other works. With: Michael Merriam

Reasons Things Go Wrong--Re(a)d Mars/Taylor (2nd Floor) — Sunday 01:00 pm -- Things that go wrong in the crafting of stories. War stories from writers and readers alike about what and why something went off the rails. With: Michael Merriam, mod.; S.N. Arly, Doug Hulick, Kathryn Sullivan

[livejournal.com profile] careswen and I traveled back to Oklahoma over the Christmas holidays to visit with family and friends. This was the first time we had been back since 2009, and [livejournal.com profile] careswen had the lovely idea that I should do some public readings and storytelling events in our old home state. It was a great idea. None of our family or friends in Oklahoma had been to one of my readings, and I was incorporating my storytelling-as-performance into what I was doing.

Wow. I haven’t updated since the first of the month. Things have been busy around here, and I’ve been (unsuccessfully) fighting off the ick. Like I said, though, things have been busy, so here is a little catch up post.

MarsCon was a great success. I had a good time, the panels were smart and well attended, and the convention big enough to be interesting and have energy, but still small enough not to overwhelm me. My reading went well, even if it was sparsely attended. All the panels I sat on were good, solid panels, with “Ask a Writer” probably being my favorite, though it turned into “Ask an Editor” for a long stretch, since all the panelist had editing experience. I was able to manage the dealer’s room at MarsCon, and able to move around on my own pretty well. I call it a success.

We left the con on Saturday night for [livejournal.com profile] ladysea’s birthday, which was also a success. It was good to be around great friends, and there was good food and conversation. Also, we got to pitch MarsCon to most of them. They are almost all of them in fandom in one way or another, so I’m hoping to have a few more of my friends at MarsCon next year.

We went to Catherine Lundoff’s ([livejournal.com profile] catherineldf) reading at DreamHaven Books. She is an excellent reader and her material was quite enjoyable. Afterwards we went out to Merlins Rest for food and drinks. The food and drinks were good, and it was great hanging out with everyone after the reading, but Merlins was too crowded and noisy for my taste. I would be willing to try it again on weeknight, maybe.

The Stoll Baby Shower was also a great success. More good friends, good food and good times. The expectant parents seemed pleased with the gifts and the out pouring of friendship and love from their friends.

The City of Hopkins hosts “The World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade” and they are not kidding. I think it took the whole parade about 5 minutes to pass. After, we went down to the VFW Post for free hotdogs and soda, but not before walking to the Elk’s Lodge by mistake. Luckily Hopkins is small and the two locations were only about four blocks from each other.

We bought new bedding. It is lovely.

Made a trip to Uncle Sven’s Comics Shoppe in St. Paul to spend a gift certificate I’ve had for years. Picked up two collections and one card game. The shop itself is small, cute, and well-stocked with friendly and knowledgeable staff.

This weekend I have Paganicon (http://tcpaganpride.org/paganicon/). I will be doing a reading/storytelling event on Sunday, where I plan to present “Four Minnesota Fantasy Tales.” Hopefully I am over my sick and my voice holds out.
