Last night's reading went well, I thought. We had a good crowd, nearly 30 people in the store, and Greg had to bring out more chairs for the audience. There were plenty of familiar faces, and some folks I had never met before, which is all to the good.

We arrived early, as is our custom. [livejournal.com profile] careswen handled the business end of things, setting up the books, making strips of paper for people to sign for the giveaway prizes, and generally working the crowd. We set the brownies and lemon bars out and Eric Heideman, who runs the Speculation Reading Series, brought drinks. When I bought the gift certificates to giveaway, Greg chuckled about how we really seemed to be organized, and I pointed out that one of the reasons we brought food and gave away gifts was that, even if I sucked, the audience might at least walk away happy from free food and swag.

Eric introduced me, and then I talked to the crowd a bit about what I was going to read. I found myself talking into the bottom of a water bottle. There was a perfectly good reason for this.

Since there were new people and unfamiliar faces, I started by reading from the short story collection, in the hopes we might sell a couple (we did, indeed, sell two copies). I read "Protect and Serve" first, a short, light-hearted piece to help me settle and warm up. I followed with "I Took the Tear," a short poem about love and time dilation. I read it a little too fast, sadly, but it seemed to go over well.

After that I switched to new stuff. I started the new works by reading the entirety of "At the Edge of Twilight, Melissa Remembers Flight." By then I think I had settled down and was reading better, and I was pleased to be reading something new. This seemed to be the piece that received the strongest over-all reaction, with several people telling me after the reading how much they had enjoyed it. I finished with a short action scene from "The Horror at Cold Springs," the Steampunk/Weird West novella that will be coming out later this year. I stopped at a tense moment and had people wanting more. I told them I'd let them know when the anthology it is appearing in becomes available for purchase.

And then I was out of time. I stood around and talked with several folks who had come out, and was pleased to see so many of my friends. (Dudes, there's just too many of you to list by Live Journal names, but you know who you are, and I feel blessed to have you all in my life). I was also pleased that they all seemed to enjoy themselves. After the reading we packed up and headed to The Cardinal, a local sports bar, for after-reading conversation and drinks. I met some new folks and had a great time talking with everyone, staying longer than I thought I was going to, since by then I was starting to feel less than well.

I made some tentative plans to get together with some folks at conventions next year, and to maybe share a signing table with someone. All-in-all, it was good night! Thank you, everyone who came out to hear me read.

It took me a while to convince [livejournal.com profile] careswen to let me grow it out, but now she's all about the facial hair on men. So I guess that means it looks good on me.

Heehee... well, I only watch one TV show regularly. I do need to pick up Firefly on DVD though. I saw Serenity and loved it. I'm a little behind the times... :) Took me til after it was off the air to even get into Sex in the City as well.

I'm glad it went well!! Congrats!

So... um, where do I get a copy of the "At the Edge of Twilight, Melissa Remembers Flight"? Cause, I'm a Melissa, ya know, and I'm egotistical enough to want a story with my name in it. :) Heehee... can I order you off Amazon? *bats eyelashes*

I'll post a link to "Melissa" when the magazine appears. It should come out in the next few weeks. As for the short story collection, there's a place on my user info page to buy it.

You are not the only one who's been seen to speak into a water bottle. Harlan Ellison did it during his before-Minicon speech a couple of years ago -- with rather less excuse than you had.

I did a little mini-riff on Harlan as I was speaking into the bottom of the bottle. For the folks who were at the Ellison talk when it happened, it got a nice laugh.

You did a terrific job -- and I was in the back, too.

"At the Edge of Twilight, Melissa Remembers Flight" was my favorite, too.

Jan has just hit me, rather hard, on the back of the head for the bizarre and idiotic thing I said to you after the reading. So justice has been served.

I am very pleased you are such a good writer. I had not expected otherwise, so I don't know why "surprised" popped out of my mouth.

Ouch. He really did dope slap me quite vigorously.

You know, it's okay though, I completely understood what you meant. If you haven't read a lot of the person's work, there is that moment of "Oh God, can my friend really write? And will it be something I can enjoy?" It's a perfectly reasonable concern, the more so when that friend is early in their writing career (I love being "early in my career" at 43-years old!) and still trying to find their voice and style.

I knew you'd do well. And, it gets easier after the first reading. :)

Wish I coulda been there, but I just don't seem to be able to flap my arms fast enough to get airborn. ;->

How did the Cardinal work out for the after-reading? I've not been there. I may have found another place, too, but it's very small and further away, so if the Cardinal works, great!

It seemed pretty good to me! The menu is pretty limited -- burgers, and more burgers -- and I didn't eat anything, so it's hard for me to comment on the food. But we were able to get a plenty-big table, and had no trouble hearing each other (one of my major complaints with many restaurants). The funny thing was the obvious neighborhood feel to the place: When we walked in, every head turned and stared, I assume to figure out if they knew us. Others in our party had the same experience.

So, not ideal, but a valid candidate. I think it's still worth checking out your idea too.
